On Thursday 26th September pupils from Fairfield Primary school welcomed the GUGAFIT team to help launch an exciting new initiative which encourages pupils to make keeping a healthy lifestyle a habit. Adam White and Cardiff City Club captain Mark Hudson helped to kick start the project with the whole school taking part in fun fitness sessions in which children exercised to music and were made aware of the importance of exercising for a minimum of an hour a day, eating five portions of fruit and vegetables and drinking up to eight glasses of water each day.
Headteacher, Ms Lewis commented, “The project supports the school’s commitment to helping ensure that all pupils lead a healthy lifestyle. The children welcomed Adam and Mark into Fairfield with enthusiasm and enjoyed learning the healthy lifestyle messages through fun activities.”
To help the smooth running of the day GUGAFIT five pupils were appointed as Young Leaders to help run activities. They will now serve as role models to ensure that the GUGAFIT message is sustained throughout the school. Adam White from GUGFIT commented “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Fairfield Primary school. The pupils have been really excited to take part in this project and the Young Leaders have been fantastic! It is important for children to be made aware of the benefits of daily exercise and healthy eating at a young age so that it is carried through to later life”.
Fairfield was one of ten schools chosen to spearhead this new project because of its strong links with Cardiff City Football Club. To end the day Cardiff City captain Mark Hudson took part in a Question and Answer session during a whole school assembly. It was due to Mark’s influence and belief in the project that GUGAFIT has been brought to schools across Wales. “With the help of the school’s Young Leaders it is important that the message of making healthy a habit is passed through the school through daily activities. Through playing football at a young age I was made aware of the importance of staying active and keeping healthy but it is important for all children to have healthy lifestyles”.
